Ratan Tata



Ratan Tata is a renowned Indian businessman and philanthropist. He serves as the emeritus chairman of Tata Sons, the holding company for the Tata Group, one of the biggest businesses in India. Tata has played a pivotal role in the growth and success of the Tata Group, which comprises over 100 companies in various sectors such as automotive, consulting, engineering, energy, healthcare, hospitality, information technology, and steel.

Ratan Tata was born on December 28, 1937, in Bombay (now Mumbai), India. He is the son of Naval Tata, who was adopted by the widow of Tata Group founder Jamshedji Tata. Ratan Tata received his early education at the Campion School in Bombay and later studied architecture and structural engineering at the Cornell University College of Architecture, Art, and Planning in Ithaca, New York.

Upon completing his studies, Ratan Tata returned to India and joined the Tata Group in 1962. He started his career at Tata Steel and worked in various departments, learning the ropes of the business. In 1971, he was appointed the director of National Radio & Electronics (NELCO), a Tata Group company that was facing financial difficulties at the time. Under Tata's leadership, NELCO turned around and became profitable again.
 
In 1981, Ratan Tata was appointed the chairman of Tata Industries, the holding company of the Tata Group's strategic businesses. In 1991, he became the chairman of Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group, following the death of his uncle, J. R. D. Tata. As chairman, Tata led the Tata Group through a period of significant growth and expansion. He was instrumental in the acquisition of several international companies, including Tetley, Corus, and Jaguar Land Rover. 

Under Ratan Tata's leadership, the Tata Group became one of the most respected and successful businesses in India and around the world. Tata's business philosophy is centered on ethics, sustainability, and corporate social responsibility. He has always believed that businesses should not just focus on profits, but also contribute to the betterment of society.
